Decompression Traction Therapy

Decompression Traction Therapies are types of therapies that utilize motorized and manual traction and decompression methods to relieve back and neck pain. At J.S.G. Chiropractic, we use both methods to treat our patients. Decompression works by gently stretching the spine to relieve pressure off of compressed or misaligned disks.

We use spinal traction and decompression to treat:

  • Back or neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Bulging or herniated disks or degenerative disk disease
  • Worn spinal joints (called posterior facet syndrome)
  • Injured or diseased spinal nerve roots
  • Headaches

If you’re one of the millions who suffer from continuous back pain, then maybe decompression therapy is right for you. Decompression is a great alternative to spinal surgery in that it is non-invasive, non-surgical, painless, and has no downtime. Living with pain every day should not have to be an option. Not only does it affect your physical routine, but it can also interrupt sleep, work, and family time as well. Decompression traction therapy is not as scary as it sounds and it is not a new therapy as decompression has been around for many years. Before you decide on decompression, you must know how your back got into so much pain and where the actual pain is coming from. When most of us feel serious back pain, it can be for a lot of different reasons. Perhaps there is a slipped or herniated disc that is pushing out of the vertebrate and touching a nerve ending. Or maybe you have degenerative disc disease where the disc itself is losing its capacity between the joints and allowing bones to touch. If you are afflicted by any of these painful back ailments, then you would probably greatly benefit from decompression traction therapy. But what exactly is it? Decompression traction therapy uses traction to elongate our spines gently and methodically and stretch the soft tissues for such things like a bulging disc to move back into place away from nerve endings, thus reducing the pain we feel. Decompression can be done in some ways such as a pulley system or even on an inverted table. These are considered old-school methods of creating traction and are not highly recommended by most professional chiropractors.

There are massage chairs, roller tables, and computerized machines that are all very effective at achieving the desired elongation of the spine. The treatments can last anywhere from twenty minutes to a full hour and usually produce positive results within a few visits. You can do this on your lunch break if you have to because no downtime results from using decompression. It is important to note that with this method of relief requires you to see JSG Chiropractic for this procedure several times within a few weeks in order to get the spine and muscles surrounding the spine to relearn where they belong.

Once treatment has been going on for a while, you can lengthen the time between visits as long as you and your back are feeling pain-free. If at any time you begin to feel pain again, you will need to see JSG Chiropractic as soon as possible to begin treatment again. It is always advised that you see JSG Chiropractic for monthly adjustments to prevent misalignment and thus pain.

This protocol is may not be recommended for those who are elderly, have undiagnosed spinal fractures, or who show signs of osteoporosis. All pertinent information about your back pain and any previous injuries must be disclosed to JSG Chiropractic before they recommend decompression traction therapy as a means of relieving your pain.
